V.W. Bro. Gary Degrow

Freemasonry teaches us to seek light—not only in knowledge, but in understanding, compassion, and faith. Within the Hamilton District, the role of the District Chaplain embodies that light. Serving both the North and South sections of our united District, the Chaplain provides spiritual support, guidance, and comfort to all Brethren, wherever they may be on life’s journey.
While our administrative structure divides the work between North and South to share responsibilities, the Chaplaincy remains one unified calling—to nurture the spiritual and moral heart of our Masonic community.
A Steady Source of Comfort and Guidance
The District Chaplain offers prayers and reflections at official events, installations, and District meetings. These moments of quiet reflection remind us of the deeper meaning of our Craft, grounding our work in reverence and purpose.
Beyond the formal duties, the Chaplain also serves as a compassionate listener—someone who offers encouragement in times of sorrow, illness, or personal struggle. The Chaplain’s presence reminds every Brother that the bonds of Masonry extend beyond the Lodge room, touching every aspect of our lives.
One Hamilton, One Spirit
The Hamilton District may operate as North and South for practical purposes, but our spiritual foundation is one and the same. The District Chaplaincy works collaboratively across both areas to ensure that all Lodges, Officers, and members receive equal support. Whether delivering prayers, visiting a Brother in hospital, or offering words of comfort to a grieving family, the Chaplain’s service is for all.
The unity of our District is reflected in this role’s very nature—quietly weaving together compassion, understanding, and fraternity across our shared Masonic community.
A Ministry of Presence
Freemasonry is not a religion, but it encourages every man to live by his faith and to honour his relationship with the Divine. The Chaplain’s work is to foster that inner connection—to offer moments of reflection that uplift without preaching, and to remind us of the moral lessons at the heart of our Craft.
Often, the Chaplain’s greatest gift is presence—the willingness to sit, to listen, or simply to stand by a Brother during times of trial. In a world that moves quickly, that steady, compassionate presence is often exactly what’s needed most.
Supporting Lodges and Members
The District Chaplain provides guidance and support to Lodge Chaplains across the Hamilton District, ensuring they have the resources and confidence to carry out their duties. This includes offering suggested prayers, reflections, or readings for special occasions, as well as encouraging Lodges to include moments of contemplation in their meetings.
When a Lodge experiences loss, the Chaplain assists in offering comfort to families and members alike, helping the Lodge community to come together in mutual support. The Chaplain also serves as a point of contact for any Brother seeking personal guidance, providing a listening ear rooted in empathy and confidentiality.
Bridging the Physical and the Spiritual
Our Craft emphasizes both moral and practical growth. The Chaplain’s work bridges those two worlds—reminding us that our labours, charitable works, and fellowship all have a deeper purpose. The words of a prayer, the quiet reflection before a meeting, or the expression of gratitude after an event—these moments enrich the life of the District as much as any ceremony or ritual.
The Chaplain encourages Brethren to reflect on the lessons of Masonry not only within the Lodge, but also in daily life—to walk uprightly, to act with kindness, and to find peace through understanding.
Collaboration and Care
Working closely with the District Officers, the Benevolence Committee, and Lodge Chaplains, the District Chaplain ensures that pastoral care is available to those who need it. Sometimes this means coordinating visits, sending a note of encouragement, or simply reaching out on behalf of the District to remind a Brother that he is remembered.
This cooperation ensures that no need goes unnoticed and that every act of kindness, no matter how small, helps strengthen our shared sense of fraternity.
Looking Ahead
As our District continues to evolve, the Chaplain’s work remains a cornerstone of unity. While the methods of communication and organization may change, the message endures: Masonry is built upon faith, hope, and charity. The District Chaplain’s role ensures that those values remain living parts of our daily practice, not just words in our ritual.
In Closing
The District Chaplain serves as a quiet but constant reminder that Masonry’s strength lies not only in its ceremonies, but in the compassion that flows between Brothers. In times of joy and in times of sorrow, the Chaplain stands ready to offer words of comfort, inspiration, and unity.
Through prayer, reflection, and presence, the Chaplain helps the Hamilton District—North and South alike—remain spiritually grounded, morally guided, and forever bound by the principles that define our Craft.
